With the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar almost complete, the quadrennial tournament has provided a platform for some of the globe’s biggest stars to compete for a chance to represent their country in a tournament like no other.

However, some stars could be playing in their final tournament due to how old they’ll be for the next World Cup in 2026.

Lionel Messi has confirmed he will play his last FIFA World Cup game when Argentina takes on France or Morocco in Sunday’s final in Qatar.

Messi led Argentina to a 3-0 win over Croatia in their semifinal on Tuesday and will earn his 172nd cap at the weekend when he tries to bring the country its first World Cup title since 1986.

“It’s many years till the next World Cup and I don’t think I’ll be able to do it. Ending it like this, it’s the best,” added the Argentinian captain.

The 35-year-old is playing at his fifth World Cup, surpassing the four of Diego Maradona and Javier Mascherano.
