I was in a very dark place, actually wasn’t dark because what I’d given up. I was writing and producing commercials. And I was extremely happy doing it. And I wasn’t interested in acting anymore.

Then my agent who I hadn’t spoken to for months rang and said they want to see you for this Merchant Ivory film. And I said no I can’t be bothered. And my brother who’s a banker, very bossy, who happened to be at home sick that day, I was living with him. Said don’t be ridiculous you’ve got to go, you need some money. I’m sick of paying for you. So he made me sort of get dressed up and I went, and they kind enough to like me.

直到有一天，我經(jīng)紀(jì)人打電話過(guò)來(lái)，我們都好幾個(gè)月沒(méi)聯(lián)系了，他說(shuō)“Merchant Ivory有部新電影，想讓你去試鏡?！蔽一厮安蝗?，我很享受現(xiàn)在的生活?！蔽腋绺缡莻€(gè)銀行家，人很強(qiáng)勢(shì)，那天他剛好在家，因?yàn)樯×?，?dāng)時(shí)我跟他住一起。他知道后說(shuō)“你別傻了，必須去試鏡，你要賺錢糊口啊，我可不想再養(yǎng)你了?！彼栽谒氖合拢揖褪帐按虬缌艘幌?，去試鏡了，然后還挺幸運(yùn)的，他們覺(jué)得我還不錯(cuò)。

That was the first sort of propulsion into movies.

那算是我正式踏入電影圈的一塊敲門磚。

Four Weddings and a Funeral??四個(gè)婚禮和一個(gè)葬禮

I got the script and I thought there must be some mistake. My agent has sent me a good script. So I rang him up and I said I think this has been a mistake. You’ve sent me a good script.

拿到劇本的時(shí)候，我覺(jué)得他們肯定是搞錯(cuò)了。這么好的劇本真是給我的？所以我打電話給我經(jīng)紀(jì)人說(shuō)“你是不是搞錯(cuò)了。你給我發(fā)了一超棒的劇本哎?！?/span>

They did that once before actually, with Jerry Maguire.And I said I think there’s a mistake here. They said yeah sorry that is a mistake that is meant for Tom Cruise.

他們以前也給我發(fā)過(guò)好劇本，我曾收到《甜心先生》的劇本。當(dāng)時(shí)我說(shuō)“這好像不太對(duì)啊。”他們說(shuō)：“哦不好意思，這其實(shí)是給湯姆·克魯斯的。”

With Four Weddings it was meant for me.Anyway it was only an audition and I went along.

還好《四個(gè)婚禮》者劇本真的是給我的。反正試鏡而已嘛，后來(lái)我就去了。

Sense and Sensibility??理智與情感

Emma Thompson adapted Sense and Sensibility, who got Ang Lee to direct it. I think it was his first non Taiwanese film. He didn’t mastered yet, the art of how to talk to British, sensitive British actors.

艾瑪·湯普森改編了簡(jiǎn)·奧斯汀的同名小說(shuō)，請(qǐng)了李安來(lái)導(dǎo)演。這應(yīng)該是李安導(dǎo)演第一次執(zhí)導(dǎo)外語(yǔ)片吧。所以他可能還沒(méi)太掌握和英國(guó)人聊天的方式和尺度，尤其像我們這樣玻璃心的英國(guó)演員。

I remember doing my first scene with Emma. And I thought we were marvellous. And we went up to Ang afterwards. He was sitting there at the monitor. We said what do you think Ang? What do you think? He went... VERY... BORING... And that was very disheartening.

我記得當(dāng)時(shí)拍完跟艾瑪?shù)牡谝粓?chǎng)戲，心想，我們演得超棒的。所以就過(guò)去李安導(dǎo)演那兒。他那時(shí)坐在監(jiān)視器旁。我們就問(wèn)“導(dǎo)演，剛剛那場(chǎng)戲你覺(jué)得怎么樣？”沒(méi)想到他說(shuō)“特別...無(wú)聊...”心碎了啊有木有。

And he famously said to Kate Winslet at the end of her first day shooting. You will get better. So he was scary but very charming.

另一個(gè)經(jīng)典段子是凱特·溫斯萊特第一天的戲結(jié)束之后。李安跟她說(shuō)“下次你會(huì)演得更好?！彼钠饝騺?lái)是很嚴(yán)肅的，但也非常有魅力。

Love Actually??真愛(ài)至上

The dancing scene was a terrible cloud hanging over the whole production for me. You know it’s hard enough to dance if you are English and middle-aged. Even with 6 pints inside you, but by yourself so stone-cold sober at 7 in the morning in front of a film crew to freak out was going to be a misery.

跳舞那段戲簡(jiǎn)直噩夢(mèng)一樣，從開(kāi)始拍攝起，我就一直很擔(dān)心。讓一位英國(guó)中年大叔在鏡頭前跳舞，真的太難了好嘛。哪怕我當(dāng)時(shí)灌了自己6品脫的酒，但一點(diǎn)兒沒(méi)醉，想象一下，鏡頭前就你一人，在清晨7點(diǎn)，對(duì)著整個(gè)劇組瘋狂舞蹈，天啊，太悲慘了。

Not only that but I thought the scene had the capacity for being the most excruciating scene ever committed to celluloid, and there are plenty of people who still think it is, but equally there are lots of people who seem to love it.

不止如此，我覺(jué)得這場(chǎng)戲有能拿下電影史上最折磨人一幕的潛力，至今還有很多人也這么覺(jué)得呢，不過(guò)當(dāng)然，也會(huì)有很多人很喜歡這一幕。

Paddington2??帕丁頓熊2

Paul King who wrote and directed it likes to tell the story that he wrote a part of them, a washed up narcissistic old actor,called it Hugh and sent it to me first. They did actually change the name when they sent it to me.? Perhaps I’d attacked. But nevertheless the letter that came with the script did say we’ve written this narcissistic monster of a washed-up actor and we thought of you. It was very difficult to get that letter but then you know it was a funny script and I thought I could do that part.

保羅·金，這部電影的編劇和導(dǎo)演，很喜歡分享這部劇里他執(zhí)筆的那部分故事，他寫了一個(gè)角色，詩(shī)歌超自戀的過(guò)氣老演員，角色名跟我一樣，就叫休，他先把劇本發(fā)給了我。不過(guò)他發(fā)我時(shí)，已經(jīng)把名字改了?？赡苁桥挛覉?bào)復(fù)吧~不過(guò)附著劇本的那封信里確實(shí)說(shuō)了：我們寫這個(gè)過(guò)氣自戀狂角色的時(shí)候，腦子里想的就是你。竟敢這么說(shuō)，這個(gè)仇我可一直記著呢。不過(guò)，劇本是真的很有意思，所以最后，那個(gè)角色我還是演啦！
