The steps seem steeped in water whencold grows the night;

天階夜色涼如水

She sits to watch two stars in lovemeet in the skies.

坐看牛郎織女星

This is an ancient Chinese poem called “AnAutumn Night”,

這首中國古詩題為 《秋夕》

written by Tang Dynasty poet Du Mu.

作者是唐代詩人杜牧

It depicts the loneliness of a palacemaid on the night of the Qixi Festival,

它刻畫了一個宮女在七夕之夜的孤獨

also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day.

七夕也稱為中國情人節(jié)

The festival falls on the seventh dayof the seventh month on the Chinese lunar calendar.

每年中國陰歷的七月初七即是七夕節(jié)

This year it falls on Aug. 7th.

今年的七夕在陽歷8月7號這天

As one of the most romantic festivalsin China,

作為中國最浪漫的節(jié)日之一

Qixi celebrates the mythologicalcouple, Niulang –cowherd and Zhinyu – the weaver girl,

七夕是為了紀(jì)念傳說中的夫妻 –牛郎和織女                  

who can only meet once a year on thatday.

他們每年只能在七夕這天相會

In the fourth line of Du Mu’s poemreads, “two stars in love meet in the skies”,

杜牧詩中的尾聯(lián)“坐看牛郎織女星”中的兩顆星星

the two stars refer to Altair and Vega.

分別指的是牽牛星和織女星

Legend has it that Alatir representsthe cowherd,

相傳牽牛星是牛郎的化身

and Vega represents the Weaver Girl.

而織女星則是由織女化作的

Watching the shining stars on theromantic day,

詩中的宮女在浪漫之夜遙望天空中的明亮的牛郎織女星

the palace maid in the poem may havebeen touched by their love.

或許是被牛郎織女的愛情打動了吧

According to one legend, Nulang andZhinyu,

相傳，牛郎和織女

an ordinary cowherd and the other abeautiful and elegant fairy,

一個是平凡的牛倌兒，而另一個則是美麗優(yōu)雅的仙女

fell in love with each other.

兩人墜入愛河

But their passion was not allowed byZhinyu’s mother, the Queen of Heaven,

但是他們的愛情卻不被織女的母親王母娘娘允許

so they were banished to opposite sidesof the Milky Way.

所以他們被放逐到浩浩銀河的兩端，（不得相見）

The couple was extremely sad and couldnot stop weeping.

夫婦兩人極度悲傷，痛哭不已

The Queen of Heaven was finally moved

王母娘娘終被打動

and allowed to meet on the seventh dayof the seventh month on the lunar calendar every year.

允許他們每年農(nóng)歷七月初七這天相會

Today is the Qixi( Double Seventh)Festival.

今天是七夕節(jié)
