UK students will graduate with an average debt of ￡50,000, so naturally graduates will be eager to get value for money from their degrees. A study by loan provider Satsuma Loans has ranked which degrees offer the best salary and employment prospects in the 10 years after graduating, and those that may leave students struggling.

They found that those who study dentistry or medicine earn an average of ￡36,000 a year after graduation. They show the best salary improvement through their career, earning an average of ￡53,300 ten years after graduating university, compared to the UK average of ￡29,000. Those who study economics and engineering are also among the best paid professionals, with starting salaries at ￡26,000 and ￡26,500 respectively.

In the long run however, those who studied economics outrank engineering graduates, with a salary of ￡49,800 ten years after graduation against ￡41,200 for engineers. Professionals working in humanities and liberal arts, however, earn the lowest income throughout their career, with a starting salary of ￡17,800 and earning only ￡5,000 more nine years later (￡22,800).

Beijing, Changchun in Jilin province, and Leshan in Sichuan province are predicted to be the top 3 cities most prone to traffic congestion during the National Day holiday, according to a report. As this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the report estimated the number of tourists bound for Beijing will far surpass the number in previous years. Beijing will top the popular destination city list, followed by Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu, Chongqing and Xi'an, it said.

The Palace Museum, West Lake and the Bund are expected to be the top 3 most popular scenic spots, followed by Tian'anmen Square, Shanghai Disneyland, Wuzhen scenic spot, Huangshan Mountain, Kuanzhai Alley in Chengdu, Hongyadong housing complex in Chongqing and the Temple of Heaven. Shaanxi History Museum and the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an and Yangshuo Park in Guilin are considered to be the top 3 scenic spots most prone to traffic congestion.

Gene-edited stem cells that are the precursors of blood cells may help cure AIDS patients, a new discovery by Chinese scientists shows, providing new insights into treatment of the serious infectious disease. In the study, researchers used the stem cells and other progenitor cells that had been gene edited to reduce a protein called CCR5, which serves as a doorway for HIV infection of human cells. 

我國科學(xué)家的一項(xiàng)新發(fā)現(xiàn)表明，經(jīng)過基因編輯后的干細(xì)胞，也就是血細(xì)胞的前體細(xì)胞或能幫助治愈艾滋病人，這一發(fā)現(xiàn)為艾滋病的治療提供了新思路。在這項(xiàng)研究中，科研人員利用基因編輯過的干細(xì)胞和其它前體細(xì)胞刪除了一種名為CCR5的蛋白質(zhì)，這種蛋白質(zhì)充當(dāng)人體細(xì)胞感染艾滋病毒的門徑。

The gene-edited cells were transplanted into a patient infected with HIV and with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The patient, a 27-year-old Chinese, improved greatly during a 19-month follow-up period. "The acute lymphoblastic leukemia was in complete remission and donor cells carrying the ablated CCR5 persisted", according to the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Sept 11.

US Fed cut interest rates

The US Federal Reserve cut interest rates again on Wednesday to help sustain a record-long economic expansion but signaled a higher bar to further reductions in borrowing costs. The Fed announced it had lowered its benchmark overnight lending rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a range of 1.75% to 2%. 

美國聯(lián)邦儲備委員會18日再次降息，以幫助維持創(chuàng)紀(jì)錄的經(jīng)濟(jì)擴(kuò)張，但暗示進(jìn)一步下調(diào)借貸成本的門檻將會提高。美聯(lián)儲宣布已將指標(biāo)隔夜拆借利率目標(biāo)區(qū)間下調(diào)25個基點(diǎn)至1.75%-2%。

It was the second Fed rate cut this year. Describing the US economic outlook as "favorable," Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the rate cut was designed "to provide insurance against ongoing risks", including weak global growth and resurgent trade tensions.
