3. How Dorothy Saved the Scarecrow
多蘿茜搭救稻草人
When Dorothy was left alone she began tofeel hungry. So she went to the cupboard and cut herself some bread, which shespread with butter. She gave some to Toto, and taking a pail from the shelf shecarried it down to the little brook and filled it with clear, sparkling water.
現(xiàn)在就只剩下多蘿茜自個(gè)兒了。她忽然感覺有些餓，于是走到廚柜前切了幾片面包，抹上了黃油，和托托一起分享。小姑娘從架子上拿下一只木桶，走到小溪邊，打了一桶清澈的溪水。
Toto ran over to the trees and began tobark at the birds sitting there. Dorothy went to get him, and saw suchdelicious fruit hanging from the branches that she gathered some of it, findingit just what she wanted to help out her breakfast.
托托跑到樹林里去，對(duì)著樹上的鳥兒狂吠起來。多蘿茜跟著托托跑去，看見樹上掛著許多甜美的果實(shí)，她摘了一些，正好可以當(dāng)作早餐。
Then she went back to the house, and havinghelped herself and Toto to a good drink of the cool, clear water, she set aboutmaking ready for the journey to the City of Emeralds.
然后她回到小房子，和托托痛痛快快地喝了一些清涼的溪水，動(dòng)身為前往翡翠城的旅途做準(zhǔn)備。
Dorothy had only one other dress, but thathappened to be clean and was hanging on a peg beside her bed.
多蘿茜還有一件小衣服，恰巧洗干凈了，掛在她小床邊的木釘上。
It was gingham, with checks of white andblue; and although the blue was somewhat faded with many washings, it was stilla pretty frock.
這件藍(lán)白格子的小衣服，因?yàn)橄戳撕枚啻?，藍(lán)色都褪得很嚴(yán)重了，但依然是一件漂亮的小衣服。
The girl washed herself carefully, dressedherself in the clean gingham, and tied her pink sunbonnet on her head.
小姑娘仔仔細(xì)細(xì)地打扮了自己，換上了這件干凈的格子小衣服，頭上又戴了一頂粉紅色的太陽帽。
She took a little basket and filled it withbread from the cupboard, laying a white cloth over the top.
她提著一個(gè)小籃子，籃子里裝滿了從柜子里拿出來的面包，用一塊白布蓋上。
Then she looked down at her feet andnoticed how old and worn her shoes were.
然后她低頭看見了自己的鞋子，這雙鞋子是又舊又破了。
"They surely will never do for a longjourney, Toto," she said. And Totolooked up into her face with his little black eyes and wagged his tail to showhe knew what she meant.
“要是穿著這雙舊鞋子，我們是不能遠(yuǎn)行的，托托?！彼f。托托用它那雙又黑又亮的小眼睛瞧著多蘿茜的臉，搖晃著小尾巴，表示聽懂了多蘿茜的話。
At that moment Dorothy saw lying on thetable the silver shoes that had belonged to the Witch of the East.
就在這時(shí)，多蘿茜看見了躺在桌子上的那雙惡女巫的銀鞋子。
"I wonder if they will fit me,"she said to Toto. "They would bejust the thing to take a long walk in, for they could not wear out."
“這雙鞋子會(huì)合腳嗎？”她對(duì)托托說，“要是我能穿上它的話，正適合走遠(yuǎn)路呢，銀鞋子是磨不壞的?！?/p>
She took off her old leather shoes andtried on the silver ones, which fitted her as well as if they had been made forher.
說著，小姑娘脫下了腳上的鞋，換上了這雙特別的銀鞋子，簡直太合適了，就像是為她量身定做的一樣。
Finally she picked up her basket.
最后她提起了小籃子。
"Come along, Toto," shesaid. "We will go to the EmeraldCity and ask the Great Oz how to get back to Kansas again."
“跟上來，托托?！彼暗溃拔覀儗⒁サ紧浯涑?，請(qǐng)求大術(shù)士奧茲，指點(diǎn)我們?cè)鯓硬拍軌蚧氐娇八_斯州去?！?/p>
She closed the door, locked it, and put thekey carefully in the pocket of her dress. And so, with Toto trotting along soberly behind her, she started on herjourney.
她關(guān)上門，加上了鎖，把鑰匙小心地放在口袋里。就這樣多蘿茜上路了，托托蹦蹦跳跳跟在她身后。
There were several roads nearby, but it didnot take her long to find the one paved with yellow bricks.
附近有好幾條路，但多蘿茜很快就找到了那條鋪了黃磚的道路。
Within a short time she was walking brisklytoward the Emerald City, her silver shoes tinkling merrily on the hard, yellowroad-bed.
她充滿希望地踏上了去往翡翠城的旅途，她的小銀鞋子踩在堅(jiān)硬的黃磚路上，發(fā)出輕快悅耳的聲響。
Thesun shone bright and the birds sang sweetly, and Dorothy did not feel nearly sobad as you might think a little girl would who had been suddenlywhisked away from her own country and set down in the midst of a strange land.
陽光明媚，鳥兒歡唱，盡管多蘿茜被龍卷風(fēng)帶到這個(gè)遙遠(yuǎn)而陌生的地方，但她并不像人們想象的那樣憂傷。
She was surprised, as she walked along, tosee how pretty the country was about her.
她一路走著，驚訝地發(fā)現(xiàn)周圍的景色異常美麗。
There were neat fences at the sides of theroad, painted a dainty blue color, and beyond them were fields of grain and vegetablesin abundance.
路邊是整齊的柵欄，漆成漂亮的藍(lán)色，柵欄那一邊是廣闊的稻田和菜地。
Evidently the Munchkins were good farmersand able to raise large crops.
很顯然，孟奇金人是耕作的好手。
Once in a while she would pass a house, and the people came out to lookat her and bow low as she went by; for everyone knew she had been the means ofdestroying the Wicked Witch and setting them free from bondage. The houses ofthe Munchkins were odd-looking dwellings, for each was round, with a big domefor a roof.
每當(dāng)經(jīng)過一戶人家，人們都要跑出來看她，當(dāng)她走過去時(shí)，他們低低地向她鞠著躬，人人都知道是多蘿茜殺死了惡毒的東方女巫，給孟金奇人帶來了自由。孟奇金人住的房子很奇怪，所有的房子都是圓的，屋頂也是一個(gè)圓形的蓋子。
All were painted blue, for in this countryof the East blue was the favorite color.
所有房子都被刷成藍(lán)色，在這個(gè)東方城市里，藍(lán)色是大家都喜歡的顏色。
Toward evening, when Dorothy was tired withher long walk and began to wonder where she should pass the night, she came toa house rather larger than the rest.
夜幕降臨，多蘿茜走了一天的路，非常疲憊了，暗自發(fā)愁自己應(yīng)該在什么地方過夜。這時(shí)，她來到一座看起來比其他的房屋都要大的房子前面。
On the green lawn before it many men andwomen were dancing. Five little fiddlersplayed as loudly as possible, and the people were laughing and singing, while abig table near by was loaded with delicious fruits and nuts, pies and cakes,and many other good things to eat.
在房子前面的綠草坪上，許多男人女人正在跳舞，五個(gè)小提琴手把琴拉得響徹天空，人們唱歌歡笑，旁邊的大桌子上放著豐盛的水果和堅(jiān)果，面包和蛋糕，還有許多其他好吃的。
The people greeted Dorothy kindly, andinvited her to supper and to pass the night with them; for this was the home ofone of the richest Munchkins in the land, and his friends were gathered withhim to celebrate their freedom from the bondage of the Wicked Witch.
人們熱情地歡迎多蘿茜的到來，邀請(qǐng)她一同吃飯，并在這里過夜。這是孟奇金最富有的人家，朋友們?cè)谶@戶人家里聚會(huì)，慶祝終于擺脫惡女巫的統(tǒng)治，重新獲得自由。
Dorothy ate a hearty supper and was waitedupon by the rich Munchkin himself, whose name was Boq. Then she sat upon a settee and watched thepeople dance.
多蘿茜享受了美美的晚餐，男主人伯克親自招待她。飯后她在一張長靠椅上休息，看著人們載歌載舞，很歡樂。
When Boq saw her silver shoes he said,"You must be a great sorceress."
伯克看多蘿茜這個(gè)小姑娘居然穿著一雙銀鞋子，忍不住問道：“你一定是個(gè)大術(shù)士?！?/p>
"Why?" asked the girl.
“為什么這么說？”小姑娘疑惑道。
"Because you wear silver shoes andhave killed the Wicked Witch. Besides, you have white in your frock, and onlywitches and sorceresses wear white."
“你穿著銀鞋子，而且還殺死了惡女巫，而且，你穿著白色的袍子，只有女巫和術(shù)士才能穿白袍子的?！?/p>
"My dress is blue and whitechecked," said Dorothy, smoothing out the wrinkles in it.
“但我的衣服是藍(lán)白格子的。”說著，多蘿茜伸手去撫平衣服上的褶皺。
"It is kind of you to wear that,"said Boq. "Blue is the color of theMunchkins, and white is the witch color. So we know you are a friendly witch."
“這件衣服可是很適合你呢。”伯克說，“藍(lán)色是孟奇金人的顏色，女巫的顏色是白色。所以我們知道你一定是個(gè)好女巫?！?/p>
Dorothy did not know what to say to this,for all the people seemed to think her a witch, and she knew very well she wasonly an ordinary little girl who had come by the chance of a cyclone into astrange land.
多蘿茜不知道該說什么好，因?yàn)樗腥怂坪醵及阉?dāng)成女巫了。但她知道自己不過是個(gè)普通的小女孩兒，是一陣龍卷風(fēng)把她帶到了這個(gè)奇怪的地方。
When she had tired watching the dancing,Boq led her into the house, where he gave her a room with a pretty bed init. The sheets were made of blue cloth,and Dorothy slept soundly in them till morning, with Toto curled up on the bluerug beside her.
當(dāng)她看跳舞看得疲倦時(shí)，伯克把多蘿茜領(lǐng)進(jìn)了一個(gè)小房間，叫她好好休息。這是一張漂亮的大床，被子是藍(lán)色的，多蘿茜在藍(lán)色的大床上酣睡到了天亮。托托蜷在她旁邊的藍(lán)地毯上。
She ate a hearty breakfast, and watched awee Munchkin baby, who played with Toto and pulled his tail and crowed andlaughed in a way that greatly amused Dorothy.
第二天，她吃了一頓豐盛的早餐，看見一個(gè)孟奇金小孩兒，正在和托托一塊玩耍，他好奇地去拉托托的尾巴，歡呼著，笑著，這場(chǎng)景讓多蘿茜也樂得不行。
Toto was a fine curiosity to all the people, for they had never seen adog before.
托托在所有人眼里都成了新奇物種，因?yàn)檫@兒的人們從未見到過狗。
"How far is it to the EmeraldCity?" the girl asked.
“到翡翠城還有多遠(yuǎn)？”小姑娘問。
"I do not know," answered Boqgravely, "for I have never been there. It is better for people to keepaway from Oz, unless they have business with him. But it is a long way to the Emerald City, andit will take you many days.
“我不知道?！辈嘶卮?，“我從來沒去過那地方。除非有什么事情要來往，否則最好離奧茲遠(yuǎn)點(diǎn)兒。翡翠城離這里遠(yuǎn)得很，你去那里要好多天工夫呢。
The country here is rich and pleasant, butyou must pass through rough and dangerous places before you reach the end of yourjourney."
我們這兒既快樂又富有，但是你必須經(jīng)過一些貧窮荒僻又危險(xiǎn)的地方，才能到達(dá)你的目的地?！?/p>
This worried Dorothy a little, but she knewthat only the Great Oz could help her get to Kansas again, so she bravelyresolved not to turn back.
多蘿茜開始擔(dān)憂起來，但她相信只有偉大的奧茲才能幫助她回到家鄉(xiāng)，所以她還是鼓足勇氣，決定去往翡翠城。
She bade her friends good-bye, and againstarted along the road of yellow brick.
她告別了朋友們，再一次踏上了黃磚路。
When she had gone several miles she thoughtshe would stop to rest, and so climbed to the top of the fence beside the road andsat down.
多蘿茜趕了好幾里路后，想停下來歇息一會(huì)，于是爬到路邊的柵欄上，坐了下來。
There was a great cornfield beyond thefence, and not far away she saw a Scarecrow, placed high on a pole to keep thebirds from the ripe corn.
在柵欄外是一大片玉米田，不遠(yuǎn)處有一個(gè)稻草人，被掛在高高的竹竿上，看管著鴉雀，不讓它們飛近長得成熟的玉米。
Dorothy leaned her chin upon her hand andgazed thoughtfully at the Scarecrow.
多蘿茜托著下巴，呆呆地望著稻草人。
Its head was a small sack stuffed withstraw, with eyes, nose, and mouth painted on it to represent a face.
稻草人的頭是一只塞滿稻草的口袋，上面畫著眼睛、鼻子和嘴巴，這就是他的臉了。
An old, pointed blue hat, that had belongedto some Munchkin, was perched on his head, and the rest of the figure was a blue suitof clothes, worn and faded, which had also been stuffed with straw.
他的頭上是一頂孟奇金人樣式的破舊的藍(lán)色尖頂帽子，他穿的也是一套藍(lán)色的舊衣服，都褪了色，衣服里面也塞滿了稻草。
Onthe feet were some old boots with blue tops, such as every man wore in thiscountry, and the figure was raised above the stalks of corn by means of thepole stuck up its back.
套在腳上的是一雙藍(lán)布面的舊鞋子。在這個(gè)地方，好像每個(gè)人都是這樣裝束的。稻草人背上戳著一根竹竿，這家伙被高高地立在玉米田上面。
While Dorothy was looking earnestly intothe queer, painted face of the Scarecrow, she was surprised to see one of theeyes slowly wink at her.
多蘿茜出神地看著稻草人那張畫出來的臉，她吃驚地看到那玩意兒的一只眼睛居然對(duì)她眨動(dòng)起來。
She thought she must have been mistaken atfirst, for none of the scarecrows in Kansas ever wink; but presently the figurenodded its head to her in a friendly way.
起先，她想她一定是看糊涂了，在堪薩斯州可沒有一個(gè)稻草人是會(huì)眨眼睛的。但是沒過多久，稻草人又忽然對(duì)她友好地點(diǎn)起了頭。
Then she climbed down from the fence andwalked up to it, while Toto ran around the pole and barked.
于是她趕緊翻下柵欄，朝著那個(gè)奇怪的稻草人走去。托托跟著跑過去，圍著稻草人的竹竿叫個(gè)不停。
"Good day," said the Scarecrow,in a rather husky voice.
“你好呀！”稻草人啞著嗓子說道。
"Did you speak?" asked the girl,in wonder.
“是你在講話嗎？”小姑娘好奇地問他。
"Certainly," answered theScarecrow. "How do you do?"
“是你在講話嗎？”小姑娘好奇地問他。
"I'm pretty well, thank you,"replied Dorothy politely. "How doyou do?"
“我很好呀，謝謝你。”多蘿茜有禮貌地問：“你好嗎？”
"I'm not feeling well," said theScarecrow, with a smile, "for it is very tedious being perched up here nightand day to scare away crows."
“我很好呀，謝謝你?！倍嗵}茜有禮貌地問：“你好嗎？”
"Can't you get down?" askedDorothy.
“你不能下來嗎？”多蘿茜問。
"No, for this pole is stuck up myback. If you will please take away thepole I shall be greatly obliged to you."
“不能呀。這根竹竿一直插在我的背上。要是你能夠幫我把它拿下來，我就太感謝你了?！?/p>
Dorothy reached up both arms and lifted thefigure off the pole, for, being stuffed with straw, it was quite light.
多蘿茜伸出雙手，輕而易舉就把稻草人從竹竿上拔下來了，因?yàn)槔锩嫒麧M了稻草，他的分量很輕。
"Thank you very much," said theScarecrow, when he had been set down on the ground. "I feel like a new man."
“非常感謝你?！钡静萑吮环旁诹说厣?，“我好像成為了一個(gè)全新的人?！?/p>
Dorothy was puzzled at this, for it soundedqueer to hear a stuffed man speak, and to see him bow and walk along besideher.
聽見一個(gè)稻草人會(huì)開口說話，看到他鞠躬，甚至他就走在自己身邊，多蘿茜困惑極了，這實(shí)在是前所未有的事情啊。
"Who are you?" asked theScarecrow when he had stretched himself and yawned. "And where are you going?"
“你是誰？”稻草人說著伸展了一下四肢，打了個(gè)哈欠，“你要到哪兒去？”
"My name is Dorothy," said thegirl, "and I am going to the Emerald City, to ask the Great Oz to send meback to Kansas."
“我的名字叫多蘿茜，”她說，“我要到一個(gè)叫翡翠城的地方去，請(qǐng)求法力無邊的大術(shù)士奧茲，幫助我回到家鄉(xiāng)堪薩斯。”
"Where is the Emerald City?" heinquired. "And who is Oz?"
“翡翠城在哪兒呢？”稻草人疑惑道，“還有，誰是奧茲？”
"Why, don't you know?" shereturned, in surprise.
“怎么，難道你從未聽說過嗎？”小姑娘相當(dāng)驚訝地回答。
"No, indeed. I don't know anything. You see, I am stuffed, so I have no brains atall," he answered sadly.
“沒有，從未聽說過。我什么也不知道。你看我的身體里塞滿了稻草，我的腦袋也是用稻草做的，所以我根本沒有大腦。”他悲傷地回答。
"Oh," said Dorothy, "I'mawfully sorry for you."
“哦，”多蘿茜說，“我真為你難過?！?/p>
"Do you think," he asked,"if I go to the Emerald City with you, that Oz would give me somebrains?"
“你覺得，”他試探性地問道，“如果我和你一起去翡翠城，偉大的奧茲會(huì)給我一些大腦嗎？”
"I cannot tell," she returned,"but you may come with me, if you like. If Oz will not give you any brainsyou will be no worse off than you are now."
“我不敢保證?！彼卮穑叭绻阍敢獾脑?，你可以和我一起去試試。就算奧茲不能給你一些大腦，你的情形也不會(huì)比現(xiàn)在更糟。”
"That is true," said theScarecrow. "You see," hecontinued confidentially, "I don't mind my legs and arms and body beingstuffed, because I cannot get hurt.
“你說得太對(duì)了，”稻草人聽了這話開心極了，“你瞧，我并不在意，我的腳和手還有身體都是稻草做的，所以我根本不會(huì)受到傷害。
If anyone treads on my toes or sticks a pininto me, it doesn't matter, for I can't feel it. But I do not want people to call me a fool,and if my head stays stuffed with straw instead of with brains, as yours is,how am I ever to know anything?"
就算有人踩著我的腳趾，或者拿針來刺我，我也是不害怕的，因?yàn)槲腋靖杏X不到這些。但是我不想人們叫我傻瓜，可我的腦袋里不像你們一樣有大腦，而是塞滿了稻草，我怎么能知道所有的事情呢？”
"I understand how you feel," saidthe little girl, who was truly sorry for him. "If you will come with me I'll ask Oz to do all he can for you."
“我能夠理解你的感受。”小姑娘深深地為這個(gè)新朋友感到難過，“如果你和我一起出發(fā)，我會(huì)請(qǐng)求奧茲給你一些大腦。”
"Thank you," he answeredgratefully.
“謝謝你！”稻草人感激地回答。
They walked back to the road. Dorothy helped him over the fence, and theystarted along the path of yellow brick for the Emerald City.
他們回到大路上。多蘿茜幫助他越過了柵欄，他們一起順著黃磚路向翡翠城走去。
Toto did not like this addition to theparty at first.
一開始托托并不喜歡這個(gè)奇怪的新伙伴。
He smelled around the stuffed man as if hesuspected there might be a nest of rats in the straw, and he often growled in anunfriendly way at the Scarecrow.
它圍著稻草人使勁兒嗅，好像他的身體里藏著一個(gè)耗子窩似的。它總是時(shí)不時(shí)地朝著新朋友不友好地亂吠。
"Don't mind Toto," said Dorothyto her new friend. "He neverbites."
“不要理會(huì)托托。”她對(duì)這個(gè)新朋友說道，“它從來不咬人?！?/p>
"Oh, I'm not afraid," replied theScarecrow. "He can't hurt thestraw. Do let me carry that basket for you. I shall not mind it, for I can't get tired. I'll tell you a secret," he continued,as he walked along. "There is only one thing in the world I am afraidof."
“哦，我一點(diǎn)兒也不擔(dān)心?！钡静萑苏f，“它咬不疼我，我可是稻草做的。來，讓我來幫你提著籃子吧。我不會(huì)覺得累的。我要告訴你一個(gè)秘密，”他邊走邊說，“在這個(gè)世界上我只害怕一樣?xùn)|西?！?/p>
"What is that?" asked Dorothy;"the Munchkin farmer who made you?"
“那是什么東西？”多蘿茜好奇地問，“是制造你的孟奇金農(nóng)夫嗎？”
"No," answered the Scarecrow;"it's a lighted match."
“不?！钡静萑嘶卮?，“是一根點(diǎn)燃的火柴呢。”
