Andthe priestess spoke again and said: Speak to us of Reason and Passion.
Andhe answered, saying:
Yoursoul is oftentimes a battlefield, upon which your reason and your judgment wagewar against your passion and your appetite.
Wouldthat I could be the peacemaker in your soul, that I might turn the discord andthe rivalry of your elements into oneness and melody.
Buthow shall I, unless you yourselves be also the peacemakers, nay, the lovers ofall your elements?
Your reason and your passion are the rudder andthe sails of your seafaring soul.
If either your sails or your rudder be broken,you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill inmid-seas. For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; /and passion, unattended, is aflame that burns to its own destruction.
Thereforelet your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion, that it may sing;
Andlet it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through itsown daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes.
Iwould have you consider your judgment and your appetite even as you would twoloved guests in your house.
Surelyyou would not honour one guest above the other; for he who is more mindful ofone loses the love and the faith of both
Among the hills, when you sit in the cool shadeof the white poplars, sharing the peace and serenity of distant fields andmeadows/—then let your heart say insilence, “God rests in reason.”
And when the storm comes, and the mightywind shakes the forest, and thunder and lightning proclaim the majesty of thesky,—then let your heart say in awe, “God moves in passion.”
Andsince you are a breath in God’s sphere, and a leaf in God’s forest, you tooshould rest in reason and move in passion.
理性與熱情
于是那女冠又說：請給我們講理性與熱情。
他回答說：
他們的心靈常常是戰(zhàn)場。在戰(zhàn)場上，你們的理性與判斷和你們的熱情與嗜欲開戰(zhàn)。
我恨不能在你們的心靈中做一個調(diào)停者，使我可以讓你們心中的分子從競爭與釁隙變成合一與和鳴。
但除了你們自己也做個調(diào)停者，做個你們心中的各分子的愛者之外，我又能做什么呢？
你們的理性與熱情，是你們航行的靈魂的舵與帆。
假如你們的帆或舵破壞了，你們只能泛蕩、飄流，或在海中停住。
因為理性獨自治理，是一個禁錮的權(quán)力；熱情，不小心的時候是一個自焚的火焰。
因此，讓你們的心靈把理性升到熱情的最高點，讓它歌唱；
也讓心靈用理性來引導你們的熱情，讓它在每日復活中生存，如同大鸞在它自己的灰燼上高翔。
我愿你們把判斷和嗜欲當作你們家中的兩位佳客。
你們自然不能敬禮一客過于另一客；因為過分關(guān)心于任一客，必要失去兩客的友愛與忠誠。
在萬山中，當你坐在白楊的涼蔭下，享受那遠田與原野的寧靜與和平——你應當讓你的心在沉靜中說：“上帝安息在理性中?！?/p>
當颶暴卷來的時候，狂風振撼林木，雷電宣告穹蒼的威嚴——你應當讓你的心在敬畏中說：“上帝運行在熱情里?！?/p>
只因你們是上帝大氣中之一息，是上帝叢林中之一葉，你們也要同他一起安息在理性中，運行在熱情里。
