《老人與海》英文版開篇 (海明威)

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy's parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.

他一個老人，劃著小船獨自在墨西哥灣中捕魚；八十四天了還沒有捕到過一條魚。最初的四十天里，小男孩一直都跟著他，而四十天后，男孩的父母便告訴孩子說：這老人的運氣肯定是跌到了谷底，簡直就是倒霉透頂了。于是男孩在他父母親的命令下，轉到了另外一條船上去捕魚，結果不出一個星期，就捕到了三條大魚。

It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon and the sail that was furled around the mast. The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.

然而，男孩看著老人日復一日駕著那空空的小船回來，總是為他感到難過。因此總會在老人回來時，上前幫忙提繩索、魚鉤、魚叉以及從船桅上卸下的船帆等。老人的船帆上滿是用面粉袋做成的補釘，使得帆布卷起來時，好似一面象征無限敗戰(zhàn)的旗幟。

The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun brings from its reflection on the tropic sea were on his cheeks.

老人消瘦、憔悴，頸后有很深的皺紋。而從熱帶海洋的海面上反射出來的強烈陽光，在老人的雙頰上，留下了一塊塊良性皮膚癌棕色的斑點。

The blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert.

老人除了兩頰布滿斑點，雙手則刻著深深的勒痕，那是操作粗魚繩的結果。這些疤痕沒有一處是新的傷口，它們就如同一個了無生機的沙漠所經歷過的侵蝕那樣久遠。

Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.

老人是這么的蒼老，但唯有雙眼依舊有著像海水一樣的顏色，既充滿了歡愉，也好像是從來沒有被打敗過似的。

"Santiago," the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up. "I could go with you again. We've made some money."

小船被拖曳上岸，老人與男孩爬上了岸邊時，小男孩向老人說：「圣地亞哥，我可以再跟你一起去捕魚，我們也曾經一起賺過一些錢。」

The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him.

老人曾經教導小男孩如何捕魚，而男孩也很敬愛這位老人。

"No," the old man said. "You're with a lucky boat. Stay with them."

「不，」老人說：「你現(xiàn)在跟上的是一條幸運的船，要好好繼續(xù)待在那兒?！?/span>

"But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks."

「但是你記得嗎？曾經有一次，一連八十七天都沒有捕到魚，然后接下來連續(xù)三個禮拜，每天都有捕到大魚呢?！?/span>

"I remember," the old man said. "I know you did not leave me because you doubted."

「我記得，」老人說：「而且我也知道，你并不是因為對我失去信心而離棄我。」

"It was papa made me leave. I am a boy and I must obey him."

「是爸爸要我離開你的。我是個小孩，我必須要聽他的話。」

"I know," the old man said. "It is quite normal."

「我了解，」老人說：「這是很正常的事?！?/span>

"He hasn't much faith."

「他太沒有信心了?！?/span>

"No," the old man said. "But we have. Haven't we?"

「他們是沒有，」老人說：「但是我們有呀，不是嗎？」

"Yes," the boy said. "Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we'll take the stuff home."

「是啊，」男孩說：「讓我先請你到露臺飯店喝杯啤酒，然后我們再一起把這些東西拿回家去吧?！?/span>

"Why not?" the old man said, "Between fishermen."

「好啊，」老人說：「打漁的都是一家人嘛?！?/span>

They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry. Others, of the older fishermen, looked at him and were sad. But they did not show it and they spoke politely about the current and the depths they had drifted their lines at and the steady good weather and of what they had seen.

當他們在飯店的露臺坐下時，許多先前就待在那兒的漁夫都在嘲笑老人，而他并沒有因此生氣；其它一些年紀較長的漁夫只是看著他，為他難過，不過他們并沒有把這份同情表露出來，只是很禮貌地談論著今天的水流情況、魚線所垂釣的深度、穩(wěn)定的好天氣，以及海上的所見所聞。

The successful fishermen of that day were already in and had butchered their marlin out and carried them laid full length across two planks, with two men staggering at the end of each plank, to the fish house where they waited for the ice truck to carry them to the market in Havana. Those who had caught sharks had taken them to the shark factory on the other side of the cove where they were hoisted on a block and tackle, their livers removed, their fins cut off and their hides skinned out and their flesh cut into strips for salting.

當天有魚獲的幾個漁夫都已經回來了，他們將捕到的馬林魚剖腹處理后，攤平放在兩塊厚木板上，一頭一個人抬著，兩人抬著魚搖搖晃晃地走進魚屋，等著冷凍車來將他們載往哈瓦那的市場去。而那些捕到鯊魚的漁夫，也已經把那些鯊魚送到在小海灣另一邊的鯊魚工廠去了，在那兒鯊魚被滑輪垂吊起來，然后被取下肝、割掉鰭、剝下皮，肉也被割成條狀準備用鹽來腌。

When the wind was in the east a smell came across the harbor from the shark factory; but today there was only the faint edge of the odor because the wind had backed into the north and then dropped off and it was pleasant and sunny on the Terrace.

每當東風吹起，鯊魚工廠的魚腥味便飄過港灣吹過來，但是今天只能嗅到一些微弱的腥味，因為風向已轉往北方，且逐漸平息了，露臺飯店上陽光充足而宜人。
