每日聽寫2.8中級煩人的辦公室壞習慣
See if you can hear what it is?
看你能否聽出它是什么。
Total jargon, yeah, yeah. I mean, it's a whole language, invented to, sort of, put you off your game in a way. Um, you know, it's completely exclusive and I don't even think half the management know what they're talking about!
講行話。沒錯,你根本聽不懂。它們專業(yè)性強,晦澀難懂,我想一半員工都不知道他們在說什么!
Rob: Yes, talking in jargon – these are words and phrases used by managers that don't really have any meaning outside the workplace. It's sometimes called 'management speak'. And it's this issue that is near the top of the list of the most annoying office habits. Jen, does your boss use any jargon?
沒錯,講行話,也就是經理所用的單詞及短語,它們在工作場所之外沒有任何意義,有時也被稱為管理語言。講行話幾乎排在最令人討厭的辦公習慣之首。Jen,你的老板說行話嗎?
Jennifer: Oh, I couldn't possibly say, he might be listening – but there are phrases that get used generally. Have you heard of 'thinking outside the box' to mean to think imaginatively with new ideas instead of traditional ones?
我可不能說,萬一他聽到了怎么辦。不過話說回來,的確有一些是慣用語。那你聽過thinking outside the box嗎?意思就是發(fā)揮想象力、用創(chuàng)新思維代替?zhèn)鹘y(tǒng)思維。
Rob: Yes, I have. And what about 'going forward' to mean in the future; and 'to touch base' meaning to discuss progress. I think workers get irritated by this jargon because it's not how someone would normally speak.
恩,我聽過。還有一些慣用語,比如going forward:在未來,to touch base:討論進展情況。我想員工被行話激怒,是因為它們不是常用語。
Jennifer: OK Rob, what's top of the list for annoying habits?
好了,羅伯,最令人討厭的習慣是什么?
Rob: Well, the biggest bugbear – another way of saying irritation – is arriving late for meetings. That is annoying when you've made an effort to be punctual, you know, on time.
恩,最煩人的是開會遲到,你努力準時,別人卻經常遲到,這真的很煩人。
