This summer I waslucky enough to go to Italy on holiday with my mum and dad. During the vacationI visited lots of wonderful places such as Rome and Naples but my favourite wasthe Leaning Tower of Pisa. The tower is an interesting and historical structuresituated in the Cathedral square in the centre of the city. It’s most famous for its unintended tilt orlean to one side.
The tower is around183 feet high and it’s narrower at the top than the bottom. There are twohundred and ninety-six steps to the top. I know this because I counted every oneas I climbed up them. The tilt wasnot planned and occurred completely unintentionally. During the constructionphase, the lean was created because inadequate foundations dug into the soft ground. Later, the list increaseduntil the structure was stabilised.
Amazingly,it took three hundred and forty-four years to build this great landmark. There are some debates aboutthe real designers, but it has been credited to someone called Pisano as the architect of thisstructure.Butover the years, many people must have worked on it.
At one time it wasfeted as one of the seven medieval wonders of the world and is now listed as aUNESCO World Heritage Site. It was an amazing place to visit. It only cost meseventeen Euros to climb to the top. And later, I lay on the grasswatching the tourists taking photos. Many of them were posing as if they wereholding the tower up. This was very funny, but it’s a traditional pose,so I did the same thing too.
You know, we haveleaning pagoda here in Nanjing. It is at the temple on Fangshan Mountain. Theysay that the lean on it is bigger than the lean on the Pisa tower. However, thepagoda is much smaller than the wonderful Leaning Tower of Pisa.
