The city’s massive sweep for coronavirus infections has continued in selected areas despite the rain. Residents in locked down communities are required to stay home for two days and be tested for the virus. Zhang Yue finds out more.

Kangcheng community in Xinzhuang Town, Minhang District is home to around 40,000 people—Shanghai’s biggest apartment compound. At 8am today (March 17), 120 tents and sunshades【遮陽(yáng)傘】had already been set up. Residents were queueing in 30 lanes to be tested for the virus. Many had prepared their QR code in advance so that the whole process would go quicker.

閔行區(qū)莘莊鎮(zhèn)的康城小區(qū)約4萬個(gè)居民，是上海最大的小區(qū)。今天（3月17日）早上8點(diǎn)，莘莊鎮(zhèn)康城小區(qū)內(nèi)的操場(chǎng)上，120頂帳篷和小白傘早已搭好。居民們?cè)?0個(gè)采樣工位上排隊(duì)接受核酸檢測(cè)。由于大多數(shù)居民都提前準(zhǔn)備好了核酸采樣二維碼，所以整個(gè)流程快速有序。

“Our residential committee has recruited some volunteers to go to the homes of seniors who have difficulty with their smartphone, to help them access the QR code. So, they don’t need to spend more time during the sample collection period.” 居委會(huì)通過一些志愿者，上門為這些老年人，提前把二維碼準(zhǔn)備好，這樣現(xiàn)場(chǎng)采集速度就會(huì)加快。

To finish within 12 hours, a group of nearly 1,000 medical workers and volunteers were sent to Kangcheng community. However, there is still a labor shortage. Many people said they weren’t upset despite the inconvenience.

這個(gè)全上海最大的社區(qū)將在12個(gè)小時(shí)內(nèi)完成4萬人的核酸采樣，為此有關(guān)方面派出了一支近千人的團(tuán)隊(duì)，但仍然人手緊張。因此醫(yī)務(wù)人員無法為老年人提供上門采樣服務(wù)，好在大家都很理解。

People are also being tested in Pujiang Town, Minhang District. A temporary test site was moved to a nearby pavilion to keep out of the rain. More than 500 residents were lined up in groups of ten.

2. MAGNITUDE 7.4 EARTHQUAKE NEAR FUKUSHIMA PREFECTURE

A magnitude-7.4 earthquake that struck Japan’s northeastern coast near Fukushima prefecture on Wednesday (March 16) night has killed at least 4, and caused extensive damage to transportation networks. Lei Shuran has more.

Art on the walls can be seen shaking and items fell from bookcases in this footage from a Fukushima property on Wednesday as a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake jolted Japan’s northeast coast. A Tohoku Shinkansen express train partially derailed between Fukushima and Miyagi due to the quake, no injuries were reported. It even shook buildings as far away as Tokyo where it left hundreds of thousands without power, and reviving【恢復(fù)】memories of a devastating quake 11 years earlier.

Some waves reached shore, but the low-risk tsunami advisory was lifted by this morning. The quake also triggered a fire alarm at a turbine in the crippled【受損的，癱瘓的】 Fukushima Daiichi plant, the same facility that was devastated by a magnitude 9 seaquake in 2011, but authorities later said that no abnormalities were found.

此次地震發(fā)生后，福島縣和相鄰的宮城縣沿海曾觀測(cè)到海嘯活動(dòng)。不過截至目前，低風(fēng)險(xiǎn)海嘯警報(bào)已被解除。福島第一核電站在地震后出現(xiàn)火災(zāi)警報(bào)，但消防部門前往現(xiàn)場(chǎng)后沒有發(fā)現(xiàn)火情。

“Regarding the damage to the nuclear facilities, it has been reported that the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant and the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant are showing no abnormalities at this time.” 關(guān)于核設(shè)施的損壞，福島第一核電站、福島第二核電站以及女川核電站的數(shù)據(jù)目前都沒有異常。

At least 107 injuries have been reported as a result of the quake, and more than 2.2 million homes were temporarily without electricity across 14 prefectures, including the Tokyo region. Power was restored for most areas by the morning, except for about 37,000 homes in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures. Authorities urged the public to watch out for more seismic【地震相關(guān)的】activity during the next few days.

3. U.S. FED RAISES INTEREST RATES FOR 1ST TIME SINCE 2018

2018年來首次！美聯(lián)儲(chǔ)宣布加息

The U.S. Federal Reserve【美國(guó)聯(lián)邦儲(chǔ)備委員會(huì)】yesterday (March 16) raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time since 2018 as it seeks to tame the highest U.S. inflation in four decades. The Fed said it decided to raise the target range for the federal funds rate by a quarter of a percentage point from 0.25 to 0.50 percent. Zhang Yue has the story.

美國(guó)聯(lián)邦儲(chǔ)備委員會(huì)昨天（3月16日）宣布，為了遏制40年以來最高的通脹水平，聯(lián)邦基金利率目標(biāo)區(qū)間將上調(diào)25個(gè)基點(diǎn)，至0.25%到0.5%之間。這也是美聯(lián)儲(chǔ)自2018年12月以來首次加息。更多信息，請(qǐng)聽張樂帶來的報(bào)道。

The Fed said that inflation remains elevated, reflecting supply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic, higher energy prices, and broader price pressures, adding the Ukraine crisis and related events are likely to "create additional upward pressure" on inflation and weigh on【對(duì)...造成重壓】economic activity. The statement also said the central bank’s policymakers expect inflation to remain elevated, ending 2022 at 4.3%, more than double the Fed’s 2% annual target.

Most policymakers now see the federal funds rate rising to a range between 1.75% and 2% by the end of 2022, the equivalent of a quarter-percentage-point rate increase at each of the Fed’s six remaining policy meetings this year. The Nasdaq composite【納斯達(dá)克綜合指數(shù)】 yesterday climbed 3.8%, its biggest gain since November 2020.Analysts suggest interest rate hikes from the U.S. Federal Reserve are likely to worsen a global debt crisis. The central banks of Japan and Turkey are expected to start raising interest rates during this week. According to the International Monetary Fund, some 60% of low-income countries are either in debt distress or at high risk of it. The Bank of England is set to hike UK interest rates for a third time in a row today.
